What’s with these GREEN sheep?

Kyle and I brainstormed a name for this blog for MONTHS before I finally settled on Baa Baa Green Sheep. Wow, you should have heard some of our earlier ideas. I will spare myself (and Kyle) the embarrassment.

It was quite the daunting task. No take-backs. This blog could be viral in 10 years, right, and a craptastic name would be a nightmare for my children someday in middle school.

My dear Kyle had an intimidating list of requirements for my blog name. Somehow, he weaseled his way into the blog naming business. I’m totally the real boss around here. Don’t be fooled 😉

So, what’s with these green sheep!?

“A Wake-Up Story”

I’ve gone from typical consumer to natural mama extraordinaire. And looking back over the past five years, the changes we made didn’t happen overnight. It was a long process, but one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done!

You’re probably reading my blog because you’re looking for a few changes yourself. No problem. I have a simple 101-step process to becoming a happier, healthier, planet saving super-being! Hah! There’s no check-list 😉

*Gasp* Where to start?

My Sour Lent: Bidding Refined Sugar Farewell

Coincidentally, I chose February 18th, the start of Lent, to start my refined sugar-free lifestyle.

We typically eat a very clean diet. I rarely ever buy candy, sugary, or prepackaged foods but somehow we always manage to collect a cabinet fully of those oh-so addicting snacks. Refined sugar in our house just doesn’t work!

Most mornings, I fix about three breakfasts. Peep and Boy Blue are ravenous wild animals at breakfast. Typically I make smoothies to start, followed by a fruit, eggs and toast. But no matter how much I feed my kids, anything on my plate is GOLD! I’m one crabby mama when 10:00 am rolls around and I still haven’t eaten a crumb. In a moment of pure weakness and desperation, I degrade myself to chocolate peanut butter cup breakfast while hiding out in the laundry room.

Non-toxic Cleaning: Wool Dryer Balls

Wool Dryer Balls

Dryer sheets: Yuck! We banished these from our house about four years ago and haven’t looked back since.

Aside from being wasteful, dryer sheets are coated with chemicals and synthetic fragrances to soften and reduce static cling. While your clothes may feel softer, dryer sheets and softeners leave chemical residues behind on your clothing.

For the past few years, I’ve been using wool dryer balls instead of dryer sheets. And I absolutely LOVE them! Not only are the wool dryer balls great to distract a toddler while I speed (and I mean SPEED) fold laundry, but they are very cost-efficient.

Bounce dryer sheets are $5.87 for 160 sheets at Walmart. I do usually 2-3 loads of laundry everyday and my dryer balls have lasted about two years. In two years, roughly 1,248+ loads of laundry (What!? I need a house cleaner, Kyle) would equate to about $65.00 in dryer sheets.

In case you’re wondering, we use cloth diapers, cloth pull-ups and eliminated paper towels. I’m not a twisted housewife who washes 624+ loads of clothes just to win a laundry trophy 😉
